About organisation

The major activity of the Lithuanian Ethnography Union is to carry on research on the nature, traditional culture and historical past of the land, public museology and publishing. The Union was founded in 1961; in 1990 the work programme was renewed and the regulations were approved (revised in 2006). The Union is methodically guided and its activity is coordinated by the Public Council. Ethnographers had compiled collections of over 9 thousands manuscripts of various themes, preserved at Lithuanian national and ethnographic museums, Many of the collections had been transmitted to the Ethnology and Anthropology Division of the Lithuanian History Institute, 300 thousands units of various folklore genres – to the Manuscripts Archive of the Lithuanian Literature and Folklore Institute. The Union is curated by the Ethnography Museum. Since 1963 complex expeditions of the Union had been organised, the collected materials had been publicized in local monographs – over 30 books had been published. In 1963-1900 the periodical “Kraštotyra” (Ethnography) had been published (25 books had been released), since 1992 the almanac “Mūsų kraštas” (Our land) had been published 4 times a year, while since 2008 the magazine “Gimtasai kraštas” (Motherland) has been published. Many ethnographic articles are also publicized in the series of local monographs “Lietuvos valsčiai” (Lithuanian settlements) by the printing house “Versmės”.
