About organisation

The square of Butrimonys eldeship is 91,99 km². The eldership consists of 28 villages inhabited by 1840 people. The territory of the eldership has been a settlement since old times. Archaeologists had find burial mounds dated 4-3 c. B.C in Jundiliškės and Jurgonys environs, which have been marked with special signs and preserved by the state. There no single explanation on the etymology of the settlements, although it is clear that the names of settlements have Baltic origins. One example is the name of Butrimonys village. The name derived from a popular Lithuanian surname – Butrimas (or Putrimas – putra - porridge). There are many similar surnames in Lithuania (especially Raseiniai District). Near Butrimonys there is a Rėžiai village. In 1989 in Rėžiai a boulder slightly smaller than the famous boulder Puntukas has been found. The boulder weights 20 t. Another 10 stones have been brought to the boulder, which will symbolize the Millennium, the anniversary of the mentioning of Lithuania’s name in the historical sources.
