About organisation
Žemaitkiemis Community acts since 2003 and unites young and elderly people of Žemaitkiemis town and surrounding villages (Antatilčiai, Kliepšiai and Žemaitkiemis homestead). It closely cooperates with the neighboring communities of Radiškės, Valai, Rečionys, Lyduokės, Šventupis, Siesikai. It has become a tradition to celebrate the Shrovetide together with the Valai village community and the Midsummer - with Radiškės community. The Community cooperates with the Eldership, the library, the Žemaitkiemis Branch of the Ukmergė Culture Centre in organising the celebrations. The Community actively participates in the events of the town, fairs held in the Ukmergė District, celebrates all national holidays, organises tours for its members in Lithuania. It also implemented the project “Plant a Daffodil for the Centennial of Lithuania”. Through the whole year the central square of the town was decorated by members of the Community with a tricolor number “100”. Every year the Community calls its members to celebrate the Assumption (in Lithuanian: Žolinė). At the celebration the ancient crafts, customs are presented, sports competitions among families organised, a fishermen’s competition is held, the traditional fish soup of Žemaitkiemis is cooked, the local music groups and guest musicians perform. Local farmers contributed to the celebration with treats. The Community’s women gather to make traditional wreaths of Žolinė. The 2018 was a special one as Lithuania was celebrating the Centennial of Independence, the town was celebrating the 450th anniversary, thus history of the town and events, which contributed to the creation of the independent state, were evoked. In 2017 members of the Community actively participated in the cycling tour on Žolinės. During the tour crosses and roadside shrines were visited and decorated thus honoring the partisan fighters.
Projects
Annually submits project applications to various financial schemes managed by the municipality, particularly aimed at strengthening the activities of non-governmental organisations and local communities. In 2019 participated in the project of the Programme for Preservation of Ethnic Culture. Since 2016 it participates in the project “Traffic Safety in Communities” organised by the Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communication. In 2018 the Žemaitkiemis Community was granted the nomination “The Jolliest of the Centennial” for the most creative and jolliest programme to celebrate national holidays at the project “Centennial Oaks of the Nation”.
